National Arthritis Month

Chiropractic is a comprehensive approach to pain relief that does not rely on surgery or drugs. Since arthritis is one of the most common causes of pain, we at Morgan Chiropractic in Anchorage wanted to observe National Arthritis Month by educating the public about what arthritis is and how chiropractors approach it.

The statistics on arthritis are sobering. About 53 million adults and hundreds of thousands of children have it. But when you consider that “arthritis” actually refers to many different joint disorders, the high numbers make more sense. The most common forms of arthritis have very different causes. Osteoarthritis is caused by wearing away of cartilage, which is what keeps the bones in the joints from rubbing against each other. Rheumatoid arthritis results from the immune system attacking a part of the joints. Both these conditions cause inflammation around the facet joints, which are what connect the bones of the back together. There are less common forms of arthritis which harm the back, as well, which are caused by genetics and bone deformities.

Inflammation and joint disorders in the back are particularly concerning because the rest of the body’s nerves branch off from the spinal cord. If it is compressed, the rest of the body may get the wrong signals.  Chiropractors relieve spinal nerve compression by making adjustments to the vertebrae. Our offices also offer means of reducing pain and inflammation, including cryotherapy, electric muscle stimulation, therapeutic ultrasounds, and massage therapy.
